Erhu Equivalent of the violin in the Chinese traditional music, the erhu, also called yueqin or hu qin, is an instrument with two strings. It is played with a bow and consists of a sound body made of wood, by a neck out of wooden, which is surmounted by two pegs allowing the tuning of the instrument (C, G), and by nylon or steel/nylon strings. |

La caisse de résonance du erhu est creuse et ouverte à l'extrémité inférieure, l'extrémité supérieure, du côté des cordes, étant recouverte d'une peau de serpent. Un petit chevalet conique, appuyé au centre de la peau, sert de support aux cordes et transmet leur vibration à la caisse de résonance. La caisse de résonance est généralement en bois et de forme hexagonale ou octogonale, mais on trouve des variantes faites à partir d'une calebasse, et d'autres où la peau de serpent est remplacée par une fine planche de bois. Cet instrument se retrouve sous d'autres formes et sous d'autres noms dans de nombreux pays d'Extrême-Orient (Corée, Indonésie, Vietnam...). |
The
sounding-box of the erhu is opened at the lower end, the higher end,
on the side of the strings, being covered with a snakeskin. A small
conical bridge, supported in the center of the skin, is used as support
for the strings and transmits their vibration to the sounding-box. The
sounding-box is usually out of wood and of hexagonal or octagonal shape,
but one finds alternatives shapes made a calabash, and others where
the snakeskin is replaced by a thin wood board. This instrument is found in other shapes and other names in many countries of the Far East (Korea, Indonesia, Vietnam…). |
