Shamisen The shamisen (or samisen) is a musical stringed instrument, used in the Japanese music. It is composed of a sounding-box (out of wood of mulberry tree or sandal), whose tops and lower part are covered with a skin of dog or cat, of a oak wooden neck and three nylon or silk strings. As on the majority of the lutes, the strings are tended since the base of the case over the entire length of the neck and are fixed at pegs allowing their tuning. The neck of the shamisen is narrow and without frets.
