Yangqin

Le yangqin est un instrument de la famille des cithares sur table, tout comme le cymbalum (tympanon), le dulcimer ou le santur.
Il est constitué de cordes tendues
au-dessus d'une caisse de résonance en bois. Les cordes sont frappées par des marteaux ou des baguettes.

Yangqin

The yangqin is an instrument of the zithers family (zithers on table), just like the cymbalum (tympanon), the dulcimer or the santur.
It consists of strings tended above a wooden sound body. The strings are plucked by hammers or sticks.

Originaire du Proche-Orient, la cithare sur table est arrivée en Europe au onzième siècle. Bien plus tard, vers 1800, c'est par l'intermédiaire des Européens que cet instrument est apparu en Extrême-Orient. D'où son nom chinois : yangqin : "instrument étranger".

Il existe une grande variété de tailles et de formes de cet instrument. Malgré cela, sa sonorité reste caractéristique, surtout du fait de l'attaque des marteaux sur les cordes métalliques.

Coming from the Middle East, the zither on table arrived to Europe at the eleventh century. Well later, about 1800, it is via Europeans that this instrument appeared in the Far East. From where its Chinese name: yangqin: “foreign instrument”.

There is a large variety of sizes and shapes of this instrument. In spite of that, its sonority remains characteristic, especially because of attack of the hammers on the metal strings.
